Type BA backflow protection devices are more commonly known as Reduced Pressure Zone valves or RPZ valves. It is a legal requirement to have these devices checked on a regular basis, at least yearly, to ensure they provide the backflow protection required.

RPZ valve is a unit consisting of two spring loaded check valves and a relief valve positioned to create a reduced pressure zone between the water source and the source of potential contamination form back flow within a building.

All installations, commissioning and testing must be carried out in accordance with the Water Suppliers’ Approved Installation Method AIM-08-01. The commissioning and testing of these valves must only be carried out by an accredited tester approved by the local water supplier.

To maintain protection against scald risk, TMVs require regular routine maintenance carried out by competent persons in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

TMVs are valves that use a temperature sensitive element and blend hot and cold water to produce water at a temperature that safeguards against the risk of scalding, typically between 38 °C and 46 °C depending on outlet use. The blended water downstream of TMVs may provide an environment in which legionella can multiply, thus increasing the risks of exposure.
