Water softening is a process to remove calcium and magnesium hardness form mains water to prevent scale formation within a given water system. Also known as base exchange softening the water softener will contain resin that undergoes a chemical reaction by exchanging calcium and magnesium ions for sodium ions, once the resin has reached its capacity for this ion exchange, the resin is rinsed with brine and flushed with mains water before use again, this process is a key stage in a softner plant cycle and is known as regeneration.
